City of Kutaisi

Kutaisi Kotais, Kutatisi, Kutaïssi is Georgia's second largest university city and is the capital of the western region of Imereti. It lies 137 miles west between Tbilisi and the Black Sea coast.

Kutaisi is known as Ancient Colchis since the days of the legendary Jason and the Golden Fleece.

UNESCO World Heritage sites of Bagrati Cathedral, and Gelati Monastery have commanding views from the mountain slopes over the city and the Rioni River.

There has been a twinning agreement with Kutaisi and Newport since 1989.

City of Newport

Newport Casnewydd is a cathedral and university city with a 145,736 population situated in south east Wales.

Newport has been a port since medieval times, a castle was built by the Normans and it gained its first charter in 1314. It grew significantly in the 19th century, when its port became the focus of coal exports from the eastern valleys of South Wales.

Newport’s St Woolos Church became the
pro-Cathedral of the Diocese of Monmouth,
becoming a full cathedral in 1949.
